Back in the early 1990's the OU did an excellent unit, "Science Matters" devoted to understanding how scare stories gain credence.

Science does matter, scare stories always disregard it.

The fact that the Al-Beeb has gone mental over Swine Flu, should tell us all we need to know..... No doubt Lady Mince has ordered a full 24/7 "we're all doomed" campaign, in order to get McSnot's never ending balls up, off the front pages.

PS: Two weeks ago Roche had an experimantal drug fail, on which they had high hopes, their stock dropped @ 17 %......the next weekend the Swine Flu panic started and the only drug that helped was Tamiflu, which gets mentioned in almost every report......who makes Tamiflu ......Roche and lo and behold, their stock has shot back up .

Take out the 'dem' and what have you got?

The Day Today and Brass Eye must be required watching for media people these days. It's bizarre sometimes - high tempo reporting without much context, 'experts' stating the extremes of possibility and a few computer animations to really dumb down the reports.

Politicians and media seem to enjoy colluding in whipping up such things. They cry wolf again and again. Presumably because they can, and because it makes them look useful and competent. Doesn't make them look like intelligent, adult statesmen though. Where have all the grown-ups gone?

The Government - 'Swine flu isn't a major threat - but we've just increased our orders of Tamiflu to cover 80% of the population'. The media - 'The Government thinks 80% of us will get it!'. The Government - 'Face masks are worse than useless for the public - but we've just ordered shedloads for the NHS'. The media - 'The Government doesn't want us to buy facemasks!'

What I find interesting is that there are reports that this is a combination of avian, swine and human flu strains. So how did that happen? I'm not a doctor but it does sound as if it was made in some Frankenstein lab somewhere. Before you dismiss this idea, take a look at this article in the Toronto Sun.

Baxter's "accidently" mixed avian flu in with a human flu vaccine and distributed it around Europe. Can't recall it as some of it is untraceable.

Do you want to get vaccinated for the flu now? What about the elderly queuing up this winter for their flu jabs? How do they know it is safe anymore?

Sort of makes you wonder what we are being distracted from, doesn't it, while all the headlines and airwaves are in full on panic mode? Are they looking in the wrong direction?

Oh Dear even The LA Times doesn't think it's that bad.......Lady Mince and the Al-Beeb are gonna have to find something else to distract us pretty soon.

Professor John Oxford, a virologist at St. Barts Hospital, said he was concerned the virus could travel to south-east Asia, where it could mix with bird flu and cause an 'Armageddon' virus.

So many experts nowadays, experts on everything, it seems there's as many experts as workers in this country.

It could in theory also combine with moon dust and mutate into a completely new life form, which causes our brains to liquify. Then we too could be epidemiologists like John Oxford (who could usefully spend some of his time on infection rates in his own hospital, with hospital infection killing daily more than the entire death rate from this flu). Should we suffer the really advanced form of the disease from this new organism, we could even qualify as politicians.

Some time back -- source long forgotten -- someone curled a lip at the media's Disease of the Month. They always have, do and will panic over some germ or other. If nothing new is causing symptoms, they always have, do and will fall back on ever-useful AIDS.
