There is a rather confused story about of the party hosted by genial Tory Party Chairman Eric Pickles (who bears an uncanny resemblance to Peter Simple's character, 25 stone Alderman Foodbotham) getting a tad out of hand.

Two guests started an altercation, the police intervened, the officer was struck and CS gas was used on the two altercators, one of whom has been arrested.

Thought it was Alderman Frodbotham, 24 stone, crag visaged, iron watch chained, perpetual chairman of the Highways, Tramways & Fine Arts Committee, Lord Mayor of the City of Bradford in the year of the 4 Lord Mayor's (1924).

PS. Until a few years ago the main Conservative fund raising organisation in Bradford, the Bradford Conservative Federation, held an annual fund raising dinner. There was always a toast to . . . 'Alderman Frodbotham, perpetual chairman . . . '. Wonder if they ever invited former Bradford Council Leader Pickles to these dinners or was there no CS on the menu ?
