December last, we started seeing a disturbing increase in the number of casualty reports – at a time when, traditionally, the campaign season should have been winding down. Only later, in typical MoD style – well after the event – did we learn that there had been a major operation in progress, codenamed Sond Chara – Red Dagger. The MoD reported the operation as a "success", but not all is all it seems.

This evening, following the earlier report of the tragic loss of the 3 soldiers in Afghanistan, ITN sent a reporter to do a piece to camera from outside the MOD.
The report was a classic. The casualties had been "inside" their "armoured" WIMIK Land Rover, which apparently had a V shaped mine resistant chassis.
Since he was standing outside the MOD building, we have to assume that he'd been briefed on these matters by the MOD's press office, so it all smacks of stunning unprofessionalism by the reporter and a deliberately misleading briefing from the civil servants.
It's no wonder you despair.
