Just as it is reality that is going to bring down the Brown government, it is going to be reality which eventually destroys the European Union, brought down by the very member state governments which currently support it. A clue to this dynamic lies in a piece in the current edition of The Guardian which laments that the British government is attempting "to undermine European emissions law" – despite, one might add, its "green" and "pro-Europe" credentials.

Is this giving them full credit for their capacity for intellectual dishonesty and deception ?

Blame the industry for its slowness in installing green generating capacity. Be seen to be “doing something” about the crisis, by going to Brussels to consult the colleagues. Present the braking/bending of the rules as a triumph for european co-ordination. Or better, a personal triumph, demonstrating the PM’s influence in europe, and the benefits of being at the heart of …

When the history of these times is written, people will be amazed and shocked that the AGW crowd never moved an inch, in their determination to shut down our economy, while the worst economic/financial storm for decades, bore down upon us.

Richard - I have been very much taken by your last two posts.

I have for a long time been very concerned by the creep of the EU into the super state that it aims to be.

However, there has been a voice in the back of my head that keeps saying "if they are as completely useless as I think they are then this project is doomed to failure". You are spot on the money when you say that everything they touch is useless, damaged, broken and wrong.

Indeed when the lights go out, when the man in the street is in fear of losing his job and his house, when the middle classes have woken up to how much of their wealth has been squandered and pissed away and how little they have left then yes, the time will come when the idiots in Brussels and Westminster will be seen for what they are and retribution shall be ours.

Bring it on. And soon.

I dont think the average Joe will be asking "what is the thing for?" if the EU steps back. He is going to be ignorant about the EU UNLESS it starts impeding his life.Some in the political class might ask about it , but they will be more of the One EUrope/ World Government types, and will be devising other ways to get their means.
