Reported in The Daily Telegraph online is data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) which show that last winter 25,300 more people died in the winter months than in the summer, an increase of seven per cent on the previous year.

Although most of these are due to circulatory and respiratory diseases and the majority occur among the elderly, the statistics do illustrate a point which global warmists are apt to ignore in pursuit of their obsession – the fact that cold is far more deadly than hot weather.

More deaths = fewer pensions. A simple calculation and it underlies all of Darling's arithmetic. They're not called ZaNu Labour without reason. PDT_Armataz_01_19 PDT_Armataz_01_19

One wonders how many elderly are killed off every year for each polar bear that is “saved.” Precious animals those.

With the hidden irony that the risks to the bears are all theoretical and their population is at a modern high, whereas the increased deaths among the elderly are real.

Absolutely spot on.

We have little heat on this house, by choice, something we got used to when we only had one bag of coal a week, a inch of water in the tin bath in the kitchen once a week and food was rationed and we frequently got up from the table hungry. What is wrong with wrapping up in a fleece or blanket when it gets cold? or even goose grease and red flannel ;-)

Umm... I thought it was ALWAYS the policy of green environmentalists to cut back on humans? Ever since the 1960s this has been (usually unspoken) implication of their agenda.

They are not fools. They recognise perfectly well that, as mankind expands, many other life forms which have competeing environmental requirements will have to diminish, or become extinct. For a while in the 1970s I seem to remember a push to reduce human numbers, but it never took off. Now it looks as if it might...
