If there ever was received wisdom after the famous Irish "no" vote, it is that the "colleagues" – if they were to have another referendum – would want it before next year's euro-elections. They would be at pains, it was held, to avoid the contest becoming an unofficial, Europe-wide referendum on the <s>constitutional</s>Lisbon treaty.

Now, it seems – at least according to the Financial Times - that the colleagues' worst nightmare is about to come true.

In some ways it doesn't matter if Ganley puts up candidates in the UK, as even if we sent a whole load of sceptic MEPs to Brussels, they won't make a blind bit of difference to the Commizars, they'll just carry on as normal, as the Berlaymont is nothing more than a pretend parliament.

Though this situation does allow UKIP to turn the Euro elections into a vote against the Lisbon Lie and I'd be stunned if the Tory's do anything other than wish it wasn't happening.
