Something we should have picked up yesterday, and now covered fully by Watts up with that, is the story run by The Telegraph (and many others), headed, "Arctic ice shelf splits in big melt".

A part of the Arctic ice shelf has sheared off creating two huge ice islands, we are told, covering an area of seven square miles (our emphasis). This, journalist Paul Eccleston breathlessly announced, "marked the biggest break up of the ice for three years."

With Russia's new fleet of ice-breakers and I dare say the Canadians/US are building the same...

Is it any sort of indication...?

Not that I am being pedantic or anything BUT your comparison images for Ice Extent make the same error that I always make when comparing different days. 2008 is a leap year so really one needs to adjust for that and work with day numbers ....

On the other hand such claimed accuracy always seems to me to be a bit OTT given likely patterns of variability.
