Booker does something that I cannot bear to do – he listens to the BBC World Service, and hence picked up the live broadcast of Obama's state of the union address last week.

I usually like to add something to Booker's column when I review it, but I'm always cautious about US politics, as I have no feeling for the nuances or the depth of knowledge that one needs to make sensible comments. His piece, therefore, stands for you to enjoy, untarnished by North input.

Good idea, a trip to Svalbard as bear bait and yep I'd pay but I'd rather the green tosser spent a July in Antarctica, sleeping with the Emperor penguins and away from my eyes - if he went oop north he'd come back [albeit in bits].

Apropos bears in general:

You don't listen to the BBC World Service.

Thanks to DAB I now even have it on in the car, a whole lot better than trying to listen to it on an old 1155 short wave receiver in the 1960's.

Contrast and compare Booker's piece to the later contrived confection promulgated via the BBC propaganda machine for domestic U.K. consumption with fawning, gushing praise and risible cherry picking...

I have now noticed this several times - the raw story gets out in the wee hours and by the time the Today program et al have got their teeth into it the meaning and sense of it is almost unrecognisable.

I listened to some stuff about Greece last year on an overnight drive (BBC World Service and Radio 5 Live) - the next day, all the pertinent awkward bits had been snipped out, the emphasis changed and re-arranged to fit a "required" story line.

Orwell's Ministry of Truth.

Moi?

been there a long time - but still gobsmacked 'pon occasion at the brazeness of the re-writes and exasperated by the apathetic dullards in the street who still stump up their telly tax. Looking on the bight side though - apparently "licence evasion" is on a steep upward path - not that the "new Saltfordians" will cough for that fact.
