It starts off so well. The Guardian editorial tells us that, "Discussions of the Greek debacle commonly assume that it's a disaster made in Greece that now requires the rest of the Europe to step in and sort it out".

"Wrong", it then says. "This is a crisis of the eurozone, in which Athens is not a leading actor but merely a stage set. The catastrophe that has been unfolding in Greece over the past year is merely the starkest incidence of long-running flaws within the eurozone".

Why do Cranmer and yourself insist upon reading the Guardian? All I can think is that you both enjoy the entertainment value.

The "flaws" cannot be fixed – they are inherent to the project – an integral part of it. Unless you are going to get political union on a Bismarkian scale, monetary union ain't going to work. And the longer the "colleagues" take before they recognise that simple fact, the worse it is going to get.

The colleagues do recognise that simple fact. They WANT Bismarkian union.

Brussels has realized how that “union on a Bismarkian scale” is their only solution, they just haven’t figured out how to sell it to the voters.

As things stand they will not have any figuring out to do...and they won't have to sell it.
They will ensure that it's the only brand available...'Otto washes whiter than white'...( or should that be shiter than shite)...as in sepulcher.

Yes. It needs another sinking too, but this time along with all hands, those who built it and those back on shore who repair and supply it, wherever they are.

Hunt them down and drown them in their own piss.

But surely even a Bismark style union only has a limited shelf life as the eventual collapse of the USSR and Yugoslavia proved.

So the EU's elite got it wrong to attempt a monetary union without a political union and now some are advocating the solution is further political union but history teaches us that won't work either!

Well at least two things has come out from the Greek debacle.....which most of us suspected, just how fantastically corrupt the Greeks are and confirmation yet again of how moronically inept the EU is.

That they were ever allowed into the Zero is idiocy of the highest order, they were always going to exploit it to their own advantage and have duly done so. No doubt when the spotlights turn on the other PIIGS and Belgium etc we will find similar corruption, perhaps only less so.

The colleagues can bleat as much as they like about how to fix the current mess, but if one is realistic this corruption is obviously a national characteristic, so no matter what sticking plaster is applied, it won't be long before the fiddles/theft start up again, if they ever stop.

Now none of this just started last month, it has been going on for ever, yet the colleagues did less than nothing to stop it and their only solution is to throw yet more of our now borrowed money, into what is clearly an institutionalised kleptocracy.

The only conclusion any sane person can come to, is that the entire EU project has to shut down,or we leave it, so fantastic is their never ending ineptitude at every turn. Some like our fishermen have know this for years. .....Any politician/party that says different should be howled off the stage.

Well thank god he wasn't made chair of any human rights body or other or that would have been most embarrassing.

Not as embarrassing as the little corporal being made Times man of the year 1938 though....now that is a corker...

Worked well enough for Germany ... started with a customs union, added a single currency and went from there ... today Prussia ... tomorrow Germany ... and then the world!!! Er ... woops.

That's the essence of the Monnet method ... political union via economic means. The idea is wrong-headed and could only have got as far as it has with deception. Now we pay for their folly.

Rubbish ... no more corrupt than any other political/socio-economic elite ... or do I have to remind you of how many politicians sit on bank boards in the UK or how Gerhard Schroeder moved from being Chancellor of Germany one day to heading up Gazprom's takeover of the German energy market the next.

If there is a difference between Greek corruption and the rest, it's only in the degree of subtlety.
