Supt Ian Wylie said: "There have been several significant incidents in this building during the past few days, which have caused serious concerns to police and local residents".

Wylie, who obviously isn't very, drools out more officialese, telling us: "The safety of the public is paramount in a situation of this kind and we took the decision to carry out a robust and swift operation, following intelligence received about the criminal intentions of those who were occupying the building".

This is very interesting and I did wonder, very early this morning, if you would find it too, and you have!

One is now left wondering about the real reasons for the rioting

Indeed, and I think you will find, whatever those reasons are, Bristol police and the local media will work with other local authorities to make sure we don't find out. Any Bristol based bloggers with something to say speak up now!

Richard, well put. Like you, I wonder what caused it. Is it an ethnic ghetto? Are we in for a summer of race riots? Will we finally get to put some of the uppity ethnics, lying cops and cheating politicians in their place?

Aye, if we are in for a summer of revolting youth, especially on Friday and Saturday nights, the revolting will have to be postponed till Monday at any rate.

Why? Because all the police are inside [their fortress precinct HQs] on a Fri and Saturday, they're out to patrol on a Monday morning though, all bright eyed and bushy tailed.... ready to harass the middle classes [the diversity Stasi] - lets face it with the number of girlies on the force and their now undue influence these days:

1. It's not safe to send 'em out on the streets.
2. Friday/Saturday is drugs and parrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrdy nite!!

I'm glad I don't live in the house next door.

1961? I was among the first to arrive and assist Dudley Borough Police in their race riot around North Street, Dudley.

Participants either got three or six months imprisonment when they appeared at court.

Similar backing from the courts might just concentrate a few minds, it did at Dudley!

A couple of threads on a messageboard found via google:

Tescos open in Stokes Croft. Bristol. Squatters evicted, riot police called in

Riot going on now in Bristol - Stokes Croft

Appears to have been open since last Friday but only yesterday did Police move on the squat across the road.

This makes for interesting reading... http://bristol.indymedia.org/article/704202

From what I can see this certainly isn't about race or ethnicity, but more like cops wanting to lay down the law and failing.

Looks like a suitable target for attack by one of those super-precise (well, sometimes) drone raids a la Obama. Collateral damage - well, probably, but time it right and it should just take out a squad of police thugs alongside the hippy thugs in the squat!

Where were the voices of the shops and other businesses of the area? Not a peep.

"This beautiful area of Croft" states one protester. Could have fooled me.

This is more an exercise in Police mis-management and local 'hippies', benefit scroungers and general hangers on for an argy with authority. I can understand the frustration of dealing with deaf bureaucrats, and sadly this is the result. Such is the progeny of state authoritarianism.

From your link Richard:

What happened in Stokes Croft has stirred up Britain's growing anti-cuts and anarchist movements, with supporters travelling from across the country to Bristol today. It looks like it's going to be a long, hot summer.

These cnuts, what a waste, if we were out of the EU or stopped giving £9 billion in foreign aid...........and how much taxpayers money is wasted in the NHS? Quangos? Local and central government?

These things are worth fighting against, not CUT's which ain't cuts PDT_Armataz_01_33

The NewShitesman should also be censured, this bint Penny is inciting people to riot [she is not the only one but wind 'em up and watch 'em tick seems to be the sewer/beeb tactic - and it is working], what a pathetic shill she is.............. a useful idiot doing the work of the champagne socialistas in the beeb and the sewer party.

If there's going to be civil disobedience, this is not the way to go about it, even if the polsleez' deserved it.

I am familiar with the area.

As usual, Avon and Somerset plod screwed up.

Stokes Croft is a scabby arse-end of St. Pauls, an area renowned for it's red light industry, ethic population and snoot cocking attitude towards authority. It's a run down, tatty inner city dump with no investment, no real commitment from the council, no real police cover - no surprise that urban "revolutionaries" see it as a tinderbox...

Local plod has come unstuck here multiple times over the years, generally with the usual heady brew of stupidity fueled ignorance, bullying arrogance and a distinct lack of enthusiasm for actually addressing problems experienced by the locals - who it has to be said are an independent lot (they've had to be...).

The aggressive + gormless heavy handedness of plod vs. a very motley crew.... The Tesco thing is a total red herring. I think some in plod circles (nationally) are squaring up for a new series of Battles of the Beanfield

I offer Oscar Wilde - the unspeakable in pursuit of the inedible - Tesco-plod-crustie - or something like that.

A re-run at the new Cabot Circus development might be fun.
