There is a point when you have to give up, because you can go further and achieve nothing more. Commenting on the Strategic Defence Review is one of those things where this must apply. In dealing with defence, there is a single absolute – a sine qua non. Defence policy is the handmaiden of foreign policy. It is subordinate to it and cannot be determined until and unless you have decided on your foreign policy.

I totally agree! This is the major thing that has been missing from all ('cept this forum of course) the on-line debates on this that I've seen. They still seem to be under the impression that our military forces are still "ours" in any meaningful sense.

It really is quite amazing ... before the election, even Fox was saying that we must settle foreign policy first. And now? We are surrounded by idiots.

I noted today that a senior Officer had a letter in the "Telegraph" saying exactly the same thing as our revered Dr. North about foreign policy. He unfortunately did not mention that it is out of our hands and Hague is redundant.

Perhaps I should change the name of the blog to "You read it here first" ... although such hubris would be tempting fate. My old building lecturer, though, always used to say "go back to first principles" and you will never go badly wring.
