We have had to remove the unregistered "guest" facility. This has allowed spam bots and other undesirables through, with the volume so great that we can't keep up with it. Add a warmist troll spamming all the threads and it is last straw time. Registered members will now have normal access.

I hope we don't lose too many lurkers. It does feel though the trolls scored a point.
Any forum members prepared to help with a troll-watch idea to try and leave Dr. N. to concentrate on what he does best?

Sandy - lurkers can still lurk, and they are welcome. But they must - unfortunately - register to do so. It seems we must have control over who accesses the forum, or we lose control of the forum.

But Richard, you gotta find some way of letting casual readers see the comments too. Blocking fquit trolls such as cannaman is one thing but don't let the cnuts effectively shut you down.

The comments and resulting interplay are a very important aspect of the blog. Apart from anything else, it is only through these that readers can get a feel for your integrity. It's how I got mine.

This is a pure technical issue. It's fixable.

Sorry, I'm not up on the software but someone is. If you're reading this and you are then please help. I'm a little surprised Sandy hasn't already done it, so maybe it's a bit of a pain. But there must be some way around it.

Cannaman is only the icing on the cake ... I'm getting between 30-50 viagra, etc ads on the forum every day and the frequency is increasing. Last night they were being planted faster than I could delete them. That is why I have been locking up the threads but that isn't working any more. I was thus having to look at the forum every ten minutes or so, just to clean out the spam. I HAVE to stop this, and there does not seem to be any other way.

Richard, I used to help moderate a football forum that ran on phpBB (the same as this one) and encountered similar problems. The fact it's so widely used and can be rather buggy, means it's particularly vulnerable. Therefore exasperated we migrated our forum over to this one:

http://www.simplemachines.org/

It's free as well but the spam problems dropped dramatically.

I've chucked it over to Sandy ... we have to think in "revamp" terms.

This was possibly the only forum on the net that had guest posting turned on.

You need to replace the crappy PHPBB captcha with Recaptcha or something like that. Though the only plugin to do it doesn't seem to be updated anymore.

I ran SMF before and I got tons of spam. It might cut the amount you get but it won’t solve the problem entirely. What about migrating to some really obscure platform? I will have a look around to see what I can find. Alternatively, you could try vbulletin. I think it’s much more secure than any other software.

Surely there is a phpbb mod that prevents first time posters from posting links? All spammers try to post links because they want you to visit their site. Such a mod would prevent spammers from making any posts while allowing genuine users to post links like any other user once they have submitted a post or two. You would still have to deal with spam registrations but at least they wouldn’t be able to post anything.

Obscure forum software……

http://www.mybb.com/
http://punbb.informer.com/
http://www.xmbforum.com/
http://www.yabbforum.com/

I think they’re all free. I’m sure they all have some sort of importing feature.

Was going to sneak in a link to some Russian Viagra site but thought the better of it.

Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

http://in.news.yahoo.com/139/20100826/9 ... -in_1.html

Thu, Aug 26 12:50 PM

Melbourne, Aug 26 (ANI): Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

Despite its rebuttal, NASA's been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates - 2012.

Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive.

"The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years," News.com.au quoted astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke as saying.

"A bold statement and one taken seriously by those it will affect most, namely airline companies, communications companies and anyone working with modern GPS systems.

"They can even trip circuit breakers and knock out orbiting satellites, as has already been done this year," added Reneke.

No one really knows what effect the 2012-2013 Solar Max will have on today's digital-reliant society.

Dr Richard Fisher, director of NASA's Heliophysics division, told Reneke the super storm would hit like "a bolt of lightning", causing catastrophic consequences for the world's health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.

NASA said that a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a similar storm occurred today, it could cause "1 to 2 trillion dollars in damages to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to 10 years for complete recovery".

The reason for the concern comes as the sun enters a phase known as Solar Cycle 24.

Most experts agree, although those who put the date of Solar Max in 2012 are getting the most press.

They claim satellites will be aged by 50 years, rendering GPS even more useless than ever, and the blast will have the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

8"We know it is coming but we don't know how bad it is going to be," Fisher told Reneke.

"Systems will just not work. The flares change the magnetic field on the Earth and it's rapid, just like a lightning bolt. That's the solar effect," he added.

The findings are published in the most recent issue of Australasian Science. (ANI)

The registration process is very quick and efficient though. Many thanks to Dr. R. :)
