The European Court of Justice has come up with a delicious ruling that rather throws into confusion the EU commission's plans to reduce <s>carbon dioxide emissions</s> pollution through its Emissions Trading Scheme. Under the scheme set out in Directive 2003/87/EC (as amended), individual member states were required to set quotas for their national emissions. However, so lose were the rules that some member states, Poland and Estonia amongst them, were rather more generous than with their quotas than the commission thought fit – entirely defeating the object of the exercise, which was to force industry to reduce its CO2 output.

Did anybody ever before endorse the creation of a massive market in illusory commodities which may be created or destroyed by fiat in some court which does not hold power in the land where those who want to trade reside? Can't they see how downright crazy it is? Even after the collapse of Lehman's, can't they see? It makes dutch tulip bulb traders look completely sane in comparison. At least you could plant them after you went bust.

Considering that the EU is based on an illusion, it is sort of appropriate ... an illusion in pursuit of an illusion.

Does anyone seriously believe they want to save the planet? Perhaps this "green economy" nonsense is a trojan horse for a pan-European economy based on technology they have themselves privately invested in, which they seek to control by via emissions permits. The nEU economy is a scam. But we already knew that.
