I wonder if there are any immigrant groups in Europe that benefit hugely from the European Union.

How about the Muslims? Could it be possible in future to live a nomadic existence (welfare husbandry) throughout the multicultural urban reaches of the EU empire without ever learning the native language or assuming the customs of the province in which you live? Possibly, maybe, but I don't think Muslims want to engage with the EU, or any of us, as much as the EU wants to be seen to engage with them. They'll never consider themselves European.

Now, if there were a class of immigrants at the opposite end of the social-pile, big-business and all that, let's call them "Jewish", they would surely be huge fans of the European ideal too. But the Jewish, who like the Muslims seem to benefit from the EU more than any other ethnic group, also seem to be the least likely to take the European identity for themselves.

So if the groups which benefit from the EU the most want the European label for themselves the least, why is it the ethnic groups which benefit the least must have the European identity the most?

I hate loath and despise the EU with a passion which will eventually kill me, whether I am tended by an English speaking Doctor or not. So having got that out of the way I will admit that my hatred won't change anything as the piggies have got too strong to push away from the trough and any one with an electric prod will be arrested for xenophobia or any number of spurious charges invented to protect the said trough.

So admitting a defeat I would suggest a way for the future that could only go some way to uniting (spit) Europe and protecting our ill and injured from non English speaking Doctors on the make.

Europe needs a common language and so far is afraid to broach the issue in a serious manner. Sensibilities and the pretence that you can keep your nationality etc prevent serious discussion. But as the great trough grows and institution form across linguistic borders a common language will be necessary, we can't have Euro plod or our Euro army populated by language graduates so we should have a common official second language to be taught officially and compulsorily in all schools in Europe.

At the moment German is spoken by more people as a first language across the trough, although English is the most common second language. So come on Euro piggies start a debate get a common language so that when my school boy French fails me while making a purchase in France and the assistant starts to sneer and turn away, I can ask in Europes second language and no ones sensibilities are hurt, or better still a Brit being patched up in hospital after a binge night out on the razzle while indulging in his culture isn't killed by a Doctor who can spoke de Englander.
