A Reuters piece, published in The Guardian - frustratingly short on detail – tells us that the EU commission has referred Italy to the ECJ "for failing to respect a ruling that the country must recover illegal state aid."

Whatever one's opinion of Italians (I shall not acquaint you with mine) they have always had a healthy attitude towards Government which we can only envy.
It follows that the ignored Gumment, only a tad more venal than our own but made up of staunch Italian patriots, will ignore the Überregierung that is the EU. Viva Italia! Viva Berlusconi (.....but just a little more discretion, Silvio.)

Living in Italy (thank God) and reading every day the nightmare that has overtaken the UK I am amazed that they (Italian Government) recovered anything at all , here the EU is something that is to be used to your advantage, and if it does not fit forget it, an old folks home is being built near us, using Italian building codes, the Architect whom I drink coffee with every morning, tells me that if he were to build using the EU regulations it would not get permission to fly, as the local government rules here, not some idiot in never never land. Italian Architecture, thousands of years old still brings the odd tourist or two to this country (and the UK)

For 'mugs' the Italians would say 'fessi' - that is exactly what we are in leaving everything to our politicians and then complaining when they turn out to be incompetent, corrupt and self-serving at our expense. We have civil servants who are fully fledged agents of the EU and our politicians are quickly co-opted when they get into government. If only we had the Italians' cheery contempt for their governments and their instinct for self-reliance.

No doubt that is why Italians have had some of the worst governments in twentieth century history.

True...but did anyone expect anything else?...Not even the Italians are that naïve.
With good wine, the best cuisine in Europe & a small surfeit of sunshine, who needs a Gumment?
Since WW2 we have had, with countable exceptions, absolutely hideous governments...culminating in the current thieving shower (in that dept. we are a serious challenge to the Italians)
Problem is that our cuisine, wine & sexual exploits lack Italian panache PDT_Armataz_01_22

The French have preserved foie gras by claiming that it is part of French culture and why not.

Stuff the hamsters!

I don't fancy the European Court of Justice chances against the French authorities.

From The DT:

......France is to be taken to the European Court of Justice for failing to protect the Alsace hamster, a cuddly rodent threatened with extension ( PDT_Armataz_01_23 ) in its native eastern France.

That could be quite nasty.
