Sometimes, days go by with nothing really significant to report on Defence of the Realm. Other times, the news floods in and it’s a job keeping up. Yesterday was one of those, and we've not finished yet – that European white elephant, the Airbus A400M has reared its computer-generated head again. Actually, although the A400M is a military aircraft, this is a political project and, once again, we have the real world impinging on the fantasy construct in which the "colleagues" have invested so much time, money and political capital.

Why don't we do what the French like doing - leaving in a huff with enough details in our pockets to build what we want ourselves.

I seem to remember an aircraft called the Short Belfast ... perhaps we should dig out the plans and get building.

Dream on, Richard...our aviation industry used to make the best kit...e.g.TSR2...but we never got to use it; the usual reason being that it cost too much, whereas the cost of the chosen alternatives proved to be multiples of the original.
Just a small part of our laissez-faire decline & fall PDT_Armataz_01_33

Touché...we can also do things badly well...(just look around you)...but we are not unique in that dept.
Another missed opportunity was the Fairey Rotodyne.

With the benefit of hindsight it would have been better to propose a multi-stage development of the aircraft rather than expect it to roll out of the factory on time, on budget and at the spec envisaged.

Start with an airframe with normal wings and off the shelf engines. Down on power and performance but probably at least equal to a Hercules and we could perhaps have had it a decade ago. Then have better engines and composite wings as anticipated upgrades.

That really is the European disease. To go for a new engine at the same time as a brand new airframe always was very risky. Originally, in the very early days, the project was simply going to be a Hercules replacement, but then hubris kicked in. They just had to go one better.
